Nelson Mandela werd in 1918 als koningszoon geboren in de provincie Transkei. Al jong realiseerde hij zich het grote verschil tussen het aanzien dat hij onder zijn stamgenoten genoot en de minachting waarmee hij door de blanke samenleving werd bejegend. Mandela sloot zich aan bij het ANC, een daad waarvoor hij een grote prijs zou moeten betalen. Hij werd geïnterneerd op het gevreesde Robbeneiland en verbleef daar bijna een kwart eeuw. Niettemin zette hij zijn strijd tegen de apartheid onverminderd voort. Het regime begon te wankelen. In 1990 kon de regering-De Klerk niets anders doen dan Mandela op vrije voeten stellen. Na vier jaar van onderhandelingen en politieke pressie wist Mandela ten slotte de eerste vrije verkiezingen te bewerkstelligen. Deze omwenteling in de geschiedenis is ondenkbaar zonder de charismatische figuur van Nelson Mandela. In 2004 publiceerde uitgeverij Contact (nu Atlas Contact) zijn biografie De lange weg naar de vrijheid.
